Alright, so thanks to Luna , I finally figured out how to add the following link to my blog! It required me "updating my layout" which meant changing my layout, but this one is much brighter and makes me just as happy. For now at least. Okay so I have a 7 page paper to write for my feminisim class. I want to write it on the image to your right. I absolutely loved this book. I found myself laughing out loud as I could relate (just a teeny bit) to Becky and her mishaps. So, what's the problem? The book ensued a heated debate. When I say heated, I mean heated! It's a feminism class. With that being said, it's one of those feminism classes that instead of being free to progressitivity (if that's a word) and a forum open to ideas, it has a very narrow definition of what is and what is not a feminist. I absolutely hate it. I told the professor that she is propagating the very stereotypes that 3rd wave feminist claim to be against! I was told that I am basically less of a woman since I buy name brand clothes and am doing so because I'm trying to mask my inner pain. WTF?? Really, if a woman chooses to buy name brand clothes she is only limiting herself to a consumer culture? I made the argument that women who do not care what they or their clothes look like could be called into question as well. By saying "I am a woman, this is what I choose to buy and look like", I feel pretty damn liberated. I don't have to wear a skirt to my ankles and a shirt buttoned to the top of my neck. I am able to go and buy whatever my wallet will allow me to buy. Whether that is a Coach bag or Gucci shades; who cares? I told her fashion is an expression of one's inner creativity. It is an outward expression of who one is. We will be finishing the discussion on Tuesday which is sure to be heated as well.
Life and times of a girl in search of it all.

Here is my dilemma. I have to write a paper. The only research I'm finding is going against how I feel about the culture of fashion and shopping. As an English major, I can write a paper about anything. However, I don't feel I would be true to myself writing a paper going against how I feel. Especially since the professor will know I do not agree with the argument. However, I'm having trouble finding research that supports my idea of women being more liberated now than ever in relation to 3rd wave feminism. That's the issue, the paper has to specifically deal with 3rd wave feminism and all the research I'm finding is against Chick Lit. Ugghh.

Oh man I read it, I thought it was sooo funny. Im actually reading "Shopaholic ties the Knot" so funny so far. I wouldn't say its a great feminine piece but its funny and its quirky and its kind real on her mode of thinking her paranoia and insecurities you know? good luck on your paper and thanks for the shout out!
I'm sorry for not being able to help you, but I haven't read much feminist literature myself, and consequently not followed many debates about different feminist views either. That said, I fully agree with you. I consider myself a feminist too, but I think the feminist movement has come further than to follow the exact same views as feminists followed 40 years ago. It must be difficult being in a class where you have to limit your views, rather than broadening them.
Thanks for the sweet comment on my blog, btw. I haven't actually been told that I look like Reese Witherspoon a lot, so thank you!
I adored that whole series and Sophie Kinsella's other books too, they are so cute and fun to read.
It sounds like your professor is letting her views sway things a bit too much, which is unfortunate, it always makes class discussion that much less helpful. I find it strange that she is equating wanting to be feminine with hiding inner pain? That is ridiculous. I wish I could be with you in that next debate, I'd take your side for sure! I did my engligh honours thesis on a pretty obviously feminist writer, and I still like brand name clothes! haha oh my.
Great blog by the way!
Oh gosh, papers are such a hassle! Especially when it's something you don't believe in. I have the same problem writing a lot of essays for a religion class but my teacher seems to be a lot more understanding than your professor - then again I am in high school. I have the feeling that this coddled nature will be shot to bits when I get to college.
Anyhoo, good luck on your research! I wish that I could help you out, but unfortunately my knowledge of feminist literature is nil.
I'm going to a special screening of the movie on Sunday! I am soo excited!
I want to see the movie
